Topographic Survey & Master Planning of Five Camping Sites

The Topographic Survey & Master Planning of Five Camping Sites project is an initiative by UNDP to develop eco-tourism infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan. The project aims to create well-planned camping sites across multiple scenic locations to promote sustainable tourism while preserving the natural environment.

Project Overview

  • Project Location: Chitral, Swat, Upper Dir, Abbottabad & Lower Dir
  • Executing Agency: UNDP
  • Project Start Date: February 3, 2021
  • Current Status: In Progress
  • Total Project Cost: 1.8 million PKR
  • Allocated Budget: 1.635 million PKR
  • Firm Type: Single Firm

Scope of Work

The project focuses on the surveying, design, and planning of five camping sites, each measuring 20 Kanals. The work involves:

  • Feasibility Study (F): Evaluating the potential of each location for eco-tourism development.
  • Surveying (S): Conducting topographic surveys to assess the terrain, water sources, and accessibility.
  • Designing (D): Preparing master plans for camping site layouts, including tents, cabins, and visitor facilities.
  • Quality Assurance (Q): Ensuring compliance with eco-friendly tourism guidelines and safety regulations.
  • Construction Supervision (C): Overseeing the implementation of infrastructure and facilities.

Project Objectives

  • To promote eco-tourism by creating organized and environmentally sustainable camping sites.
  • To boost local economies by attracting domestic and international tourists.
  • To ensure minimum environmental impact through sustainable development practices.
  • To improve accessibility and infrastructure for visitors while maintaining natural aesthetics.
  • To establish safe and comfortable camping experiences with essential facilities.

Key Features of the Project

1. Five Eco-Tourism Camping Sites

  • Chitral: Focus on high-altitude camping and adventure tourism.
  • Swat: Riverside camping experience with cultural and historical attractions nearby.
  • Upper Dir: Surrounded by forests and hiking trails for nature enthusiasts.
  • Abbottabad: Easily accessible site, ideal for family and group camping.
  • Lower Dir: Offers scenic mountain views and bird-watching opportunities.

2. Master Planning & Infrastructure Development

  • Tent and Cabin Areas: Dedicated spaces for camping tents, glamping tents, and wooden cabins.
  • Basic Amenities: Restrooms, potable water, waste management, and security facilities.
  • Eco-Friendly Design: Use of renewable energy sources, sustainable materials, and low-impact construction.
  • Recreational Spaces: Hiking trails, bonfire spots, picnic areas, and adventure activity zones.

Project Challenges

Despite significant progress, the project faces several challenges:

  • Terrain Complexity: Conducting topographic surveys in rugged and remote landscapes.
  • Environmental Concerns: Ensuring minimal ecological disturbance during development.
  • Logistical Constraints: Transporting materials and equipment to remote camping locations.
  • Weather Conditions: Extreme seasonal variations affecting construction schedules.
  • Community Engagement: Educating local communities about the benefits of eco-tourism and involving them in management.

The Topographic Survey & Master Planning of Five Camping Sites is a pioneering eco-tourism initiative that will enhance KP’s tourism potential while preserving its natural beauty. Once completed, these sites will offer unique camping experiences, boost local economies, and attract sustainable tourism, making KP a leading destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
