The project titled "03 Nos of Govt. Primary Girls School" was initiated by SHED INGO in Dir Lower/Upper. It began on March 3, 2017, and was completed by March 20, 2017. The primary objective of this project was to establish three government primary schools for girls in the region, promoting education and empowering young girls in the community. With a total budget of 30 million PKR, the project aimed to create educational infrastructure that would provide a conducive learning environment for the students. A budget of 1.87 million PKR was allocated for the planning and design phases, which were executed under a single-firm contract.
Classrooms: The project focused on building classrooms for the three primary schools. Each school was designed to accommodate a number of students and provide an ideal learning space. The classrooms were designed with the intention to promote a healthy and effective learning atmosphere, with proper lighting, ventilation, and seating arrangements that cater to young learners.
Boundary Wall: A boundary wall was constructed around each school to ensure the safety and security of the students and staff. The boundary wall also helped define the school’s premises, keeping it separate from the surrounding areas and preventing unauthorized access to the school grounds.
Internal Road: To improve accessibility within the school premises, internal roads were constructed. These roads ensured smooth transportation for both students and staff, particularly during rainy seasons when the terrain could be challenging. The internal road system also contributed to better traffic management within the school grounds.
This project had a very tight timeline of just over two weeks for completion. Despite the short period, the project was executed efficiently, with all necessary components — classrooms, boundary walls, and internal roads — being completed in time to serve the educational needs of the girls in Dir Lower/Upper.
The total project cost of 30 million PKR covered all aspects of the construction, including materials, labor, and any required administrative expenses. The design and planning budget of 1.87 million PKR was used to create the blueprint for the three schools and develop the educational infrastructure, ensuring the schools would meet the required educational standards and safety regulations.
Although the project was completed within the allocated timeframe, several challenges were encountered during its execution:
Logistical Issues: Given the remote locations of Dir Lower and Upper, transporting materials and construction equipment to the sites posed logistical challenges. The rough terrain and difficult access routes required careful planning and coordination to ensure that resources arrived on time.
Weather Conditions: Unpredictable weather, especially during the winter months, created occasional delays. Heavy rainfall or snow affected construction schedules, particularly with the external work related to boundary walls and roads.
Cultural Sensitivity: As the project was focused on girls’ education, it required careful consideration of local customs and cultural factors. Ensuring the community's support for the schools and addressing any potential resistance was a key consideration in the planning and execution of the project.
Budget Management: Managing the project within the allocated budget posed its own set of challenges. Despite the limited budget for design and planning, the project was completed with cost-effective solutions that did not compromise the quality or safety of the educational facilities.
Material Availability: Sourcing quality building materials in the region within the limited timeframe was a challenge. Ensuring that the materials met the required standards while remaining within budget constraints required extensive negotiation with suppliers and contractors.
The "03 Nos of Govt. Primary Girls School" project stands as a significant achievement in providing educational infrastructure to underserved regions in Dir Lower and Upper. Despite facing challenges such as logistical issues, unpredictable weather, and cultural sensitivities, the project was completed successfully within the given timeframe. The establishment of these schools has contributed to the empowerment of young girls in the region by providing them with safe and accessible educational facilities. This initiative plays a crucial role in advancing education in the area and creating opportunities for the next generation of female leaders.
